Restoring Bottomland Hardwood Forests in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley
Overview
Flyway Forests is a reforestation and carbon removal project focused on restoring native bottomland hardwood forests across the Mississippi Alluvial Valley. The project works with landowners to convert marginal or frequently underperforming agricultural land into long-term forested acreage that can provide ecological, conservation, and carbon benefits.
Why It Matters
The Mississippi Alluvial Valley has historically supported some of the largest and most important bottomland hardwood ecosystems in North America. Reforestation in this region supports improved wildlife habitat, soil health, water quality, flood resilience, and long-term carbon sequestration.
Landowner Partnerships
Flyway Forests works with landowners interested in long-term conservation and carbon project participation. The program is designed to create a path for landowners to receive value from land that may be marginal for traditional row crop production while contributing to regional restoration goals.
Carbon Market Development
Flyway Forests is developing a high-integrity reforestation carbon project with a focus on durable forest growth, transparent monitoring, and long-term project accountability.
Partners / Collaboration
Flyway Forests is a partnership between Land and Water and Ducks Unlimited, working alongside conservation, forestry, technical, and landowner partners to support project development and long-term implementation.
Land & Water’s Role
Land & Water helped develop and capitalize Flyway Forests and provides financial, operational, and administrative support to the program. Our role includes project structuring, capital planning, commercial development, project administration, and coordination with conservation, technical, registry, and market partners.
